PE Polyethylene

HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE grades — tough, resistant to low temperature and chemicals, across blow moulding, film, pipe and injection moulding.

PE bottles and closures

About this material

Polyethylene is classed by density and structure into HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE. HDPE is stiff and pressure resistant, which suits blow-moulded containers, closures and pipe; LDPE is soft and clear and goes mainly into film, shrink film and laminate substrates; LLDPE resists tearing and puncture better and is the usual choice for packaging and agricultural film. PE is tough, does not embrittle at low temperature and resists chemicals well, with the best processing behaviour and recycling compatibility of the commodity plastics — the base material of the packaging and houseware industries.

Typical applications

Blow-moulded containers and chemical drums, closures and bottles, packaging and laminate film, crates and pallets, pipe and fittings, woven bag tape, monofilament and netting.

  • Select by density:HDPE for stiffness and pressure resistance, LDPE for softness, clarity and easy processing, LLDPE for toughness and tear resistance — choose by the duty and the feel of the part.
  • Match MFR to the process:low flow (around 0.2–0.5 g/10min) for blow moulding, film grades typically 1–2 g/10min, injection grades usually 5–20 g/10min.
  • Watch ESCR:chemical drums, containers and parts under long-term load need an HDPE grade with good environmental stress crack resistance, especially where detergents or oils are involved.
  • Printing and lamination:LDPE and LLDPE film needs corona treatment for ink and laminate adhesion — confirm film thickness and strength requirements before specifying.
  • Compliance and weathering:food-contact, household-contact and long-term outdoor use should be declared up front, so the grade and the test documents can be matched to it.
