Plastics for Automotive Parts

Automotive parts call for dimensional accuracy, heat and weathering resistance and batch stability. We match material grades to where the part sits in the vehicle and supply the documents needed for incoming inspection and customer audits.

Common difficulties on automotive moulding projects

Material selection for automotive parts is tied to assembly accuracy, the service environment and OEM audit requirements. These are best confirmed early, before the vehicle validation stage.

Recommended material solutions

Common directions by part location and temperature class. The final grade depends on the strength requirement, wall thickness and the applicable OEM standard.

Documents and support we can provide

Test reports and manufacturer documents are available from your sales contact. We check them against the specific grade before sending, and this site does not offer PDF downloads.

Questions from buyers and engineers

The four questions we are asked most often on automotive projects.

Note: for safety-related and visible parts, a tool trial and the relevant validation are advisable before volume use. We can help connect you with the manufacturer’s material data.

Requirements & pain points

Common requirements and difficulties in Automotive Parts

High volumes and strict appearance demands, constrained by product cost and certification cycles.

01

Odour and VOC requirements on interior parts

Interior materials carry defined limits for odour grade and volatile organic compounds. A poor selection tends to surface during vehicle-level testing, where rework is expensive.

02

Weathering and appearance on exterior parts

Exterior parts are exposed to UV, rain and temperature cycling. Weathering class, the stabiliser system and colour stability all need attention.

03

Assembly accuracy and shrinkage consistency

Clips, locating features and mating surfaces have small clearances. Shrinkage variation between batches causes assembly problems or rattle, so a stable grade and consistent batches matter.

04

Certification and incoming traceability

Incoming material has to satisfy ROHS and REACH requirements and carry traceable batch records and test documents to meet customer audits and system requirements.

Documents & support

Documents and support we provide

Test reports and producer documents are available on request — we check them against each grade.

ROHS / REACH / SGS test documents

Provided against the specific grade to support incoming inspection, customer audits and shipping requirements. Available on request.

Grade selection by part location

Material family and class recommendations based on the temperature and weathering requirements of interior, exterior or under-hood surroundings.

Batch records and shipping documents

Supply is organised by batch, with certificate of analysis and related documents where the manufacturer provides them, for traceability.

Basic processing data

Shrinkage direction, drying conditions and recommended barrel temperatures can be obtained from the manufacturer on request.

FAQ

Common purchasing and engineering questions

QInterior parts have strict odour requirements. Do you have low-odour grades?
Some upstream manufacturers offer low-odour, low-VOC grades and we can match against your requirement. Odour assessment usually needs customer criteria and third-party testing, so validating a small batch first is advisable.
QCan you supply glass-fibre reinforced or mineral-filled PP?
We can source reinforced and modified grades, with the filler system and ratio selected against strength, stiffness and shrinkage requirements. Availability and specification follow the manufacturer.
QDo your materials meet OEM or customer system requirements?
We supply grades that meet the stated requirements, together with the test documents that can be obtained. Whether they satisfy a particular system is judged by the customer against their own standard, and we supply the documents their checklist calls for.
QHow long will an exterior colour hold without fading?
Weathering performance depends on the grade, the additive system and the service environment. A weather resistant formulation is advisable for exterior parts, validated by accelerated ageing before volume use.
