About this material

PS is polystyrene, supplied as general-purpose GPPS and high-impact HIPS. GPPS is clear, stiff and easy to colour, but noticeably brittle; HIPS carries a rubber phase, which lifts impact strength considerably and gives a white or natural appearance suited to housings and structural parts. Both flow well, shrink predictably and process over a wide window, which is why they rank among the higher-volume commodity plastics in appliance, packaging and houseware production.

Typical applications

Clear containers and packaging, lamp covers and clear parts, appliance housings and internals, electrical enclosures, stationery and toys, disposable tableware.

  • Clarity or impact first：choose GPPS where light transmission and rigidity matter, HIPS where a tougher housing part is needed — the two are not interchangeable.
  • Brittleness and stress cracking：GPPS is brittle, so avoid sharp corners and interference fits at assembly points, or move the part to HIPS.
  • Limited chemical resistance：PS is sensitive to some solvents and oils, so compatibility should be checked wherever the part makes contact.
  • Grade by flow：thin-wall and long-flow parts take high flow; thicker parts can run medium or low flow to reduce internal stress.
  • Food contact and compliance：tableware and food packaging need the right grade and test documents confirmed, which are available on request.
